My first real foray back into live music was Saturday June 26th at Mag Bar. Fuck did I miss Mag Bar. I missed the sold out sweaty mess of a live punk show. I missed my ears sort of ringing at the end of the night. I missed seeing my friends! Honestly, this show could have been somebody farting into a ukulele and I would give it a good review.
The first band up was Mommy’s Cigarettes. They mostly sucked but they borrowed the drummer from Prayer Line (Trent Combs) and he saved the night for them. They have a song about Beetlejuice that they wrote because they like Prayer Line so much. They should do more of that. Here’s a video of me introducing Trent before the Mommy’s Cigarettes show:
Next up was Mr. Clit and the Pink Cigarettes, a garage punk band from Indianapolis. This was my first time seeing them, and I enjoyed their quirky/serious vibe. The music was somewhere between The White Stripes and The Beach Boys, but more energetic. Check ’em out on Bandcamp if you haven’t already.
Of course, there aren’t many bands in the world that can compete with a Belushi Speed Ball live show. They came prepared as always, this time with 100 pre filled nerf guns and a Terminator theme. Unfortunately, because of a knee injury, Senor Diablo couldn’t be there, but they found two worthy replacements. Although in my mind, nobody can replace Diablo.
Check out a video from their set below:
Personally, I would never want to follow Belushi Speedball. It seems like the kiss of death. However Vox Populi was able to pull it off. I think it was because #1, They sounded great, and #2 people are starved for good live music. So the normal after Belushi meltdown of crowds didn’t happen.
